What is the ICDL?

The ICDL is proof of your ability to use a computer and its most popular applications.

  INTERNATIONALLY ACCEPTED

Building on its success in Europe, where it is known as the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL), this industry standard licence is approved and supported by more than 40 computer societies around the world, including the Computer society of South Africa, CEPIS, and the British Computer Society! The ICDL is available in over 135 countries and 32 languages. Over 4 million participants worldwide, and 100 000 in South Africa alone. More than 12 million tests delivered. 15 000 Test Centres around the globe. Approximately 300 ICDL Training & Testing centres in South Africa. SITA (The State IT Agency) uses the ICDL for staff training - so do the Department of Labour, the Reserve Bank and the Post Office, etc.

  Why is ECDL/ICDL so effective?

There are many different computer courses available. This makes the choice daunting for employers and individuals alike. ECDL/ICDL is a standard definition and a measure of actual computer skills that is internationally recognised. It also provides a balance between employer needs and employee skills. It is fast becoming the most widely recognised computer qualification in the world. This is due to its relevance to practically everybody and the support and monitoring of the independent organisations behind it.

  Who sets the Standards?

The European Union commissioned the Council for European Informatics Professionals (CEPIS) to set the standards for the ICDL. The work of maintaining and updating the standards is carried out by the European Computer Driving Licence Foundation (http://www.ecdl.com). In most of sub-Saharan Africa the ICDL is administered by the Computer Society of South Africa through the ICDL Foundation of South Africa.

Looking for a Job? Aiming for Promotion? Further Studies? Overseas?

Finding a job is much easier if you have an ICDL. Large multinationals have adopted the ICDL, setting it as the performance benchmark they expect from employees. There are currently 923 000 ECDL/ICDL participants in the UK, where the National Department of Health and the Department of Defence require staff to obtain an ICDL!!
Most universities and technikons including the University of South Africa (UNISA) give recognition and credit for the ICDL.
